What Is Logistics and Why Does It Matter? | OneLink Holdings
Logistics is the art and science of planning, organizing, and managing resources to ensure goods are produced and delivered in an efficient manner. In other words, it involves the process of getting materials from one place to another in a cost-effective way. It’s not just about transporting products or services—it’s also about making sure that those products are delivered on time, in the right quantity and at the right cost. In today’s globalized world, logistics is becoming increasingly important as companies look for ways to increase efficiency while reducing costs. Let’s take a deeper look into what makes up logistics and why it matters.
What are the 4 types of logistics?
Components of Logistics
Logistics can be divided into five main components: inventory management, warehousing, transportation, order fulfillment and freight management.
Inventory management focuses on tracking what products or services you have available for sale or delivery, when they need to be replenished, how much stock is required to meet customer demand, etc. Warehousing is all about where you store your products or services before they are delivered to customers. Transportation refers to how those products or services get from point A to point B safely and efficiently. Order Fulfillment comes under outbound logistics, as it involves picking, packing and shipping orders efficiently. Finally, freight management is the process of organising freight transport, including negotiating rates and selecting the best carriers to get the goods from A to B.
